Anarchitect

TMT Libraries

Sharjah, UAE

ANARCHITECT was commissioned to design a public library as part of an initiative between the Government of Sharjah and Knowledge without Borders in support of ‘2016 - Year of Reading’, aimed to make reading and books more approachable within a cultural and new contextual condition within the Emirate.

The practice created two mirroring library TMT structures (Thermally modified timber), one containing Philosophical and the other Psychological literature that would engage in a physical dialogue with one another in multiple configurations around an unexpected piece of nature (tree, or shrub) occurring in the urban realm.

We developed subtle differences between each library in a way that one of the structures would be oriented towards the courtyard, darker, and suitable for introspection of one’s own mind and emotions, and the other would be more open and transparent, letting its readers observe the surroundings and responding and embracing the natural sunlight.
